Old New Delhi Hero

US Embassy Renovation

New Delhi, India
This landmark building, designed by Edward Durell Stone and constructed in 1958, is the first embassy constructed under a 1954 FBO policy requiring designs to be sympathetic to the local environment and local architectural tradition.

KCCT designed the renovation of the east chancery of this building, one of the many designed by Stone within the compound. The three-story building surrounds an atrium featuring a landscaped water garden shaded by a bronze sunscreen suspended from catenary cables.

Additionally, KCCT led design for a multi-phased construction effort in the occupied west office building annex, also designed by Stone as a functional companion to the chancery office building. The project constructed a new access control facility to serve the expanded consular section, renovated the ground floor, and developed an infill structure within the existing building courtyard. This complex phased renovation required highly detailed phasing plans for minimal relocation of personnel and maintenance of operation and diplomatic mission throughout the project. The exterior restoration and interior design in public areas capitalized on the skills of local trades and craftsmen to produce architecture consistent with the original design.
