Revised Hero

US Embassy

Reykjavik, Iceland
The US Embassy in Reykjavik is an innovative modernization and adaptive reuse of a commercial office campus.

To replace its outdated compound of converted residences, the US Embassy in Reykjavik transformed a modern Icelandic office complex into a secure, efficient diplomatic facility. Originally designed by Danish architect KHR arkitekter AS and constructed in 2003 by Istak, the New Acquired Building was reimagined through a design-build partnership between KCCT and Istak to meet the US Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations technical and security standards.

Reyk Exterior Edit

KCCT led the design process, preparing bridging documents, guiding the design-build delivery, and designing the secure space fit-out. The renovation balanced the integration of new high-security and high-performance systems with preservation of the building’s clean, modern Icelandic aesthetic of concrete, Corten steel, aluminum, and glass. The project encompassed full mechanical and electrical system replacements, new telecommunications and redundant satellite infrastructure, upgraded waterproofing and air barriers, and comprehensive blast, seismic, and life-safety improvements.

The design drew inspiration from Iceland’s tectonic landscape, organizing the Embassy into three interconnected “pods” joined by a skylit circulation spine.

The building harnesses Iceland’s geothermal and glacial water sources to power hydronic radiant heating and cooling systems that can operate independently during outages. Decentralized ventilation systems and permeable paving help regulate temperature and stormwater naturally, aligning with the Department of State’s high-performance goals.

The project also required innovative problem-solving to overcome Iceland’s logistical challenges. With most materials imported from mainland Europe and the U.S., KCCT and Istak developed creative scheduling and enclosure solutions to maintain progress through the dark winter months.

The new Embassy preserves the architectural integrity of the original design while delivering a modern and workplace that enhances safety, efficiency, and morale for diplomatic staff.
