Embassy of Australia

Washington, DC
The Embassy of Australia is a modern symbol of openness, diplomacy, and connection.

Inspired by Australia’s iconic landscape and distinctive geography, the new Embassy of Australia captures the essence of an ancient and vast continent, home to one of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. The transparent exterior reflects Australian values of trust and openness, while the expansive interior reflects the boundless landscape and native forests. The new Embassy replaces its predecessor on the same site, a seamless continuation of this representational space for one of Australia’s largest diplomatic presences worldwide.

KCCT served as the US architect of record in association with lead designer Bates Smart of Melbourne to deliver a six-story building that projects Australia’s position and status in both public and diplomatic contexts through a timeless design that is inviting, functional, and meets critical security requirements.

Design Approach

The Embassy’s design captures the spirit of Australia—its open skies, natural light, and warm materiality—while balancing civic presence with accessibility. The facade’s copper cladding, inspired by the sandstone monolith Uluru, transforms with light throughout the day, creating a dynamic dialogue between solidity and openness.

Auditorium

A transparent ground level invites the public into a museum of Australian art, visible through double-height low-iron glass. The building’s monolithic form “erodes” at key points to reveal welcoming, democratic spaces that blur boundaries between interior and landscape.

At the heart of the Embassy, a sunlit atrium connects ground and sky, symbolizing Australia’s openness and offering an orienting space for staff and visitors alike. Narrow floor plates and vertical “tea point” hubs encourage collaboration, wellness, and movement throughout the day.

Materiality

Natural materials such as timber, stone, glass, and copper convey warmth, authenticity, and a sense of permanence. Materials were sourced from Australia or locally where possible to promote a healthy indoor environment and an enduring architectural character that feels both modern and grounded.

Sustainability

Achieving LEED Gold certification, the Embassy stands as a testament to Australia’s leadership in sustainable design and energy performance. A thermally efficient façade, rooftop photovoltaics, and advanced HVAC systems with radiant slabs and heat recovery collectively reduce total energy use by nearly 34 percent compared to the LEED baseline. Generous daylighting strategies minimize reliance on artificial lighting, while open, flexible floor plates promote long-term adaptability.

The landscape enhances biodiversity through native plantings that create diverse urban habitats supporting migratory species and pollinators. Over one-third of the site is landscaped, including a green roof with a rooftop apiary that accommodates up to 240,000 bees. These elements combine to create an urban oasis that celebrates ecology and resilience within a diplomatic setting.

Workplace Innovation

Designed for flexibility and connection, the Embassy supports 180 desks across open, light-filled spaces. Modular planning accommodates future change with minimal disruption, while vertically linked staff hubs foster interaction and collegiality. Equitable access to natural light and views reinforces a sense of transparency and shared purpose across all levels.
