Department of State Operations Center

Washington, DC
KCCT led the transformation of a legacy control center within the Department of State headquarters in Washington, DC.

The project revitalized an outdated, single-floor facility into a secure, technologically advanced, mission-critical operations center designed for 24/7 functionality.

The upgraded center plays a pivotal role in United States diplomacy, providing real-time global monitoring, crisis response, and inter-agency coordination. The design facilitates this high-stakes decision-making under pressure.

Design Approach

The design is centered around the concept of a “world theater”—a tiered, multi-level environment that enhances visibility, communication, and collaboration. This immersive, theater-like layout supports high-volume information flow and coordination among multiple federal agencies and local partners. KCCT’s approach was driven by comprehensive user engagement; by conducting detailed analysis of legacy workflows and collaborating with key stakeholders, the team developed a design that streamlines operations and ensures that information reaches the right people at the right time.

Body v2

This high-performance, future-ready command hub was featured by former Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the “Operations Center” episode of his Walks with Tony series.
