Eventide Visitor Center

Pulaski County, Indiana

The Department of the Interior manages the nation’s most iconic destinations, which attract millions of visitors from across the globe. Each national park is anchored by a visitor center, where guests can enrich their understanding of the uniqueness of the park. The visitor center has been a mainstay of national parks for half a century, but with shrinking budgets and digital information expansion, the National Park Service is rethinking the size and scope of these facilities.

KCCT articulated the design of a National Wildlife Refuge visitor center, intended as a gateway in the development of a 75-acre tract of land that embraces an overall sand prairie site development, including headquarters/visitor operations, parking areas with pathways, and sidewalks to the visitor’s center, along with trail heads that lead to natural park features and points of interest. Maintenance operations, staff parking, and ancillary roads, along with wells, wastewater treatment, and stormwater management, are seamlessly integrated into the Net-Zero visitor center infrastructure and woven together in a palette of local materials, wood, and stone.

The headquarters and visitor center design embodies the distinctive characteristics of a sand prairie terrain site. The design and method of construction represent the high artistic values forged in the local indicative material finishes woven historically in expected ways familiar to the site. Modern interpretations supplement local finishes in the form of structurally enhanced wood members, concrete walls, and armatures clad in ancient local stone and rock.
