U.S. Embassy

The Embassy campus plan is conceived around Bronze Age and Roman archeological remains discovered during demolition and excavation. The central stone garden features these artifacts. Functionally organized around a linear central atrium, the Chancery derives inspiration from the simple indigenous stone architecture of Malta. The Franka rock face limestone from the Maltese Island of Gozo unites the Embassy with the architecture and geology of its host country and the limestone xeriscape of the site. The Chancery exterior is clad in a mixture of limestone, terra cotta colored granite, and stucco. The colors used in secondary buildings on the compound coordinate with the Chancery.

Sustainability is achieved through exterior sun-shading, a light harvesting system incorporating light shelves and dimming controls, low-flow and waterless plumbing fixtures, solar water heating, 90% rainwater capture and reuse, xeriscaping, and advanced air filtration. A 350-kW photovoltaic installation shading parking and a wind turbine provide renewable energy and serve as an education tool.
