United States Botanic Garden

When major deterioration was detected in the limestone façade of the U.S. Botanic Garden, one of the oldest botanical gardens in North America, KCCT was engaged to undertake two interrelated tasks centered on the elegant Beaux Arts style headhouse.

The first, a restoration measure, addressed cleaning and repairing cracking and spalling in the limestone façade. A second task was to replace the roof, to prevent moisture penetration in the stone, with the first vegetative roof on Capitol Hill, and the first experimental roof of its kind in the Washington region. The new green roof provides year-round data on plant performance and climate symbiosis in the context of the urban environment.
