Beyond the obvious security measures that must be undertaken for a client of this nature, this major renovation's overarching theme had to be one of flexibility. In order to respond rapidly to world events, the client requested that the new space be one that could adapt quickly and would allow an entire department to shift its position on the floor at a moment's notice. The designers pushed all support services like copy, file, and conference rooms around the elevators and stairwells, freeing up large spaces for open offices allowing for instant staffing changes. The designers utilized colors to strengthen the sense of place and departmental identity at different floors. A renovation of this magnitude entailed replacement of HVAC and communications systems as well as full integration with existing systems in other portions of the building.
