Carl T. Rowan Briefing Room, U.S. Department of State

KCCT transformed the Carl T. Rowan Briefing Room in the U.S. Department of State, where the Secretary of State meets the press and daily briefings are given by the Office of Public Affairs into a hybrid space that is both dignified and technologically advanced. With the design of this new dynamic space, the firm brought the Briefing Room, barely touched in 30 years, into the 21st century. Carefully calibrated curving absorptive and reflecting acoustical panels produce auditory clarity for both the audience and the speaker. Stage lighting around the podium and dimmable indirect lighting in the seating areas create variable lighting options. Shared linear computer tables with fixed swiveling chairs and microphones for reporters contribute to an orderly visual and audio environment during press conferences. Television cameras occupy tiered platforms in the rear of the room supported by the joint data and communications center housing equipment for each network. Raised floors create a plenum for distribution of ventilation, air conditioning, power and communications to each occupant.
